Tiger Woods holds significant influence over how the PGA Tour is run, thanks to his role on the Player Advisory Council.

Woods has put together a remarkable career on the PGA Tour, collecting 82 victories and 15 majors along the way. Those achievements have more than earned him a place at the heart of how the game is organised and shaped.

The former World No. 1 spoke to reporters ahead of this week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

One of the standout moments from his press conference was when he didn’t close the door on appearing at The Masters later this year.

But another point that caught attention was his remarks about potential changes to next season’s schedule, which have been talked about for some time now.

Although nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s a growing expectation that Brian Rolapp will introduce a more condensed schedule beginning with the 2027 season.

‘Scarcity’ is the word that keeps coming up as the PGA Tour moves towards a revamped schedule for 2027.

Woods was asked to explain why ‘less is going to be more’ for the PGA Tour in the future.

“Yeah, we’re going to get more top players playing,” Woods said. “We’re going to make it more competitive by having fewer cards, so that in itself is going to make it more competitive just to be out here.”

“Having Brooks come back, having Patrick Reed play as well as he is and committed to coming back to the TOUR, having Scottie as dominant as he has been, and to have Rory complete the Career Grand Slam, you have a lot of top players, but also you have a lot of youth that has come up during that time.”

He added: “We’re trying to create opportunities for that turnover coming from the PGA TOUR-U or the Korn Ferry and trying to get more youth out here because eventually they’re going to take over the game.

“So trying to create that opportunity, trying to create the right competitive model and environment. To foster that has been a challenge.“

So what has changed since then? Woods was asked to reflect on what was different about the schedule during the height of his career compared to now.

“The schedule was different,” Woods explained.

“We played I think it was La Costa at the time, I think, as the Tournament of Champions. Ended sometime after Halloween. So that’s a 10-month span of golf. That was all part of the PGA TOUR.

“There was at that time, November, December, I think it was considered the silly season. It was just a different landscape. We played on the TOUR for 10 months.

“Had an opportunity to play some fun events, some different type of formatted events in November and December, or some of the players like myself would go down to Australia or South Africa and play on their Tour.
