Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has stated that the attacking numbers of Liverpool and Chelsea duo, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James, is ‘through the roof’, as he told talkSPORT.
The Villa right-back was talking about improving his own game in the attacking third when referencing the two men on Liverpool and Chelsea’s flanks.
This season, Alexander-Arnold, has supplied 11 assists and scored two goals from his 26 Premier League matches for the Reds.
Whilst his England counterpart, James, has five goals and six assists from 17 league games in Chelsea colours.
From Cash’s last seven league games, he has three assists and two goals, but it’s the overall package and consistency levels that he is trying to take to the next level.
“The last couple of weeks, the goals and assists have all improved, but mainly as a defender is to get a clean sheet as well,” said Cash.
“I think Emi Martinez will tell you that, he loves a clean sheet. But it’s finding a balance really of getting both. And there’s nothing better when you win 1-0 and you get a clean sheet, even if you haven’t assisted or scored.
“As an attacking fullback, you look at the numbers of Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold, they are through the roof.
“It’s about time I started stepping up and doing that.”
Whilst Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo might want to have a word, it could be argued that both James and Alexander-Arnold are the best in the business in England’s top-flight.
They might not have done the talking on the international stage yet, but some would point towards other reasons for that.
However, when it comes to the domestic stage, the English duo are proving that, for the next ten years, no one has to worry about filling that right-back role.
They are two outstanding talents and the pure definition of how that fullback role has transformed in the modern game and what is now asked of those types of players.
The fact that these players can pick passes like a number 10 and win you games like they are playing up front just says it all.
