Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been looking at Weston McKennie for quite some time now, and if they weren’t convinced by his ability before, they will be now.

Indeed, the midfielder absolutely ran the midfield in the USA’s game against England on Friday evening, and he earned a Man of the Match nod from Sporting News, receiving an 8/10 rating.

McKennie Man of the Match

Sporting News hailed McKennie for a showing they believed to be a Man of the Match performance.

“The best player of the match for the United States, Weston McKennie’s performance against England was a complete turnaround from his dud against Wales,” They wrote.

“In a more wide role thanks to Berhalter’s 4-4-2 lineup, McKennie was excellent in creating dangerous attacking moves for the United States and keeping the U.S. on the ball, despite England’s desire for possessional dominance. He won four of his six ground duels, including two tackles, and completed his only dribble attempt, with the majority of his touches coming on the edge of the attacking third out wide. He completed 28 of 31 passes (90%) and was accurate on both his long ball attempts.

“It was a thrilling performance from McKennie, whose only knock will be the missed chance in the first half where he skied a massive opportunity over the crossbar. He needed to do better with that finish. Otherwise, an exceptional, Man-of-the-Match performance from McKennie.”

Premier League ready

McKennie is a target for Tottenham Hotspur, and Friday evening showed that he’s ready to play in the Premier League.

He bossed a midfield battle against the likes of Declan Rice and Mason Mount – supposedly two of the Premier League’s best, and it’s hard to imagine that he wouldn’t be right at home in the middle of Spurs’ midfield.

The American looks absolutely ready-made for the Premier League and Spurs would be wise to make their move in January.
