Bournemouth had a quiet January window, signing only 18-year-old goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United, letting Glenn Murray return to Brighton on a permanent basis and loaning out a bunch of youngsters.
By far the most important move was one they had no control over – Chelsea’s decision to recall Nathan Ake from his loan at the Vitality Stadium.
Ake had really impressed during his time at Bournemouth, so much so that Antonio Conte is convinced he can be of use to him despite Chelsea not having European football to contend with and John Terry and Kurt Zouma both currently warming the bench.
He was the Cherries’ best defender, spending time both at left-back and centre-back, and his speed in what can be quite a ponderous backline was vital as was his ability on the ball and useful habit of scoring at the other end.

It’s no coincidence that in the five games since he left Eddie Howe’s side have conceded 15 goals.
Aside from Ake, the fact some of the summer signings have failed to impress may suggest the club’s board were cautious about splashing any cash in the middle of the season – even if there are possible improvements to be made in various areas of the team.
