Liverpool are expected to be extremely busy during this summer’s transfer window.

The Reds’ left-back woes have been well documented this season, with Jürgen Klopp preferring the unorthodox option of playing midfielder James Milner in the role, rather than deploying the more naturally defence-minded Alberto Moreno in the left-back slot.

The German obviously does not trust the Spaniard’s ability, probably because of his woeful showing in last season’s Europa League final, and the addition of a top-class left-back will surely feature highly on his wish-list.

An intersting option for the former Borussia Dortmund manager could be Manchester City’s soon-to-be free agent Gael Clichy.

The 31-year-old is vastly experienced in playing at the highest level, and must be seen as an upgrade on Klopp’s current options at Liverpool.

The 20-capped France international is still one of the quickest defenders around, despite his advancing years, and is perfectly suited to play under Klopp’s high-intensity pressing regime.

With three Premier League titles to his name, Clichy would add a much needed level of winning experience to the Liverpool side – something the current crop of players are desperately bereft of.

His availability on a free this summer means a move to Merseyside would be accompanied by little risk for the Reds, and his acquisition would be a cheap, yet effective solution to a real problem position for Klopp.

With footballers of today going on to play well into their late 30’s, Clichy arguably still has plenty of years ahead of him playing at the highest level, and Klopp should not hesitate to bring him to Anfield this summer.
