Newcastle finally ran out 3-0 winners over German side 1860 Munich on Friday afternoon despite a poor first-half display thanks to goals from Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes – and here are three things learned.
Sven Botman verdict
In what was his first outing for Newcastle, the Dutch defender and summer signing was the first substitute made by Eddie Howe. He came on for captain Jamaal Lascelles at half-time, with Lascelles struggling during the first 45.
But initial impressions are that Botman looks an incredible specimen. Lean but very strong. His presence was felt in the second 45 as Newcastle dominated. Won all of his aerial duels, but his passing was just as good.
Keeping it normally comfortable, he did not misplace a pass – even when attempting a couple of long balls. That included a lovely long ball out to Allan Saint-Maximin. Newcastle look as though they have got a proper diamond.

Big season for Sean Longstaff
It has been a bit stop-start for Longstaff. Breaking into the side under Rafa Benitez and even being touted with an England call-up, he was then a bit-part player under Steve Bruce. He might be the same under Eddie Howe.
The penny looks as if it has dropped. With Joelinton dropping into midfield and Bruno Guimaraes on board, Longstaff really has to make an impression during pre-season. He came on with just under 30 minutes left.
He made that impression, though. Only moments after his introduction, his quick turn and then gorgeous strike into the top corner doubled Newcastle’s lead. Good passing, good energy. A reminder for Eddie Howe.
Callum Wilson may require time
Newcastle were poor in the first half – even more so if we consider 1860 Munich are a third-tier German side. While the entire team were below-par and that might have left Wilson somewhat isolated, he did very little.
Rarely did he make much attempt to get involved – the highlight of his first half makign a few runs down the channels. His big moment came in the second half, inside the first minute, but he fluffed a golden chance.
Wilson spent the majority of last season out injured and it might be that he is playing catch-up with his teammates. But his quality is undeniable and Howe needs to give the £20million man (Sky Sports) time to get up to speed.
