The Premier League is rightly regarded as one of the best leagues in the world, but these sides would add a little more historical significance to it.
A lot of people don’t care much for history in the modern day of football. If the team you support were successful a few decades ago, they couldn’t care less. However, it seems wrong not to look down the leagues towards teams that were once such vital elements in the English game and hope for them to come back up.
Below are three of the biggest, and most famous teams in England, all of whom have been out of the top flight for too long.
Leeds United
Elland Road
“Marching on together” is the famous chant that rings around Elland Road, and it appears as if Leeds United are doing just that under Garry Monk. The Yorkshire based side were once one of the greatest sides in Europe under Don Revie, and their history in the game cannot be erased. Their position back in the Premier League would be entertaining and fascinating for all.
Monk has the side playing as well as they have in years, and if the former Swansea boss brings promotion to Leeds he’ll be a hero.
Nottingham Forest

With Nottingham Forest having spent the last few years floundering in the Championship, it’s easy to forget they were once back to back European Champions under Brian Clough. They were mainstays in the top flight for a long time, and the league would benefit from their appearance if only due to their historical significance and passionate fanbase.
Forest have been slipping in recent seasons, but there is no denying their significance in the history of the game.
Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have been flirting with promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in a while, and it’s finally time for Hillsborough to once again be recognised as a top venue within the English game. They haven’t been in the big time for well over a decade, but their name alone is enough to warrant a place in the division.
Wednesday missed out at the death last season, losing the playoff final at Wembley to Hull, but under Carlos Carvalhal they look set for another promotion push.
