The new Swansea City boss has done a fantastic job at turning his teams fortunes around.

Many thought Swansea City were doomed for relegation when former Derby County boss Paul Clement was appointed the club’s new manager at the beginning of January 2017. However, after pulling the team up to 15th in the table, four points from the drop, Swansea City are now in with a healthy chance of survival.

Clement’s reorganistion of the team, and his straight-forward back-to-basics approach has been somewhat of a breath of fresh air at the Liberty Stadium, and Swans fans are now filled with a renewed hope.

So which players have been key to Clement’s success? HITC Sport have selected three whose roles in Clement’s system may just prove to be vital to the Swans survival chances…

1. Alfie Mawson

The former Barnsley defender has really stepped into the shoes of former Swans captain Ashley Williams over the last few weeks, and has become vital to Clement’s style of play at the Liberty Stadium. The big defender, who has chipped in with a couple of important goals for his new team, has been the bedrock on which Swansea’s counter-attacking football is based, and will be vital to them as the season comes to an end.

2. Tom Carroll

Eyebrows were raised when Paul Clement brought in Tom Carroll from Tottenham Hotspur in January, with the England youngster not playing much football at White Hart Lane. However, Carroll’s decision making and passing ability has proven what a smart signing this was. Able to pick a neat pass in the toughest of situations, Tom Carroll is now an important creative force in the centre of Swansea’s midfield, filling the gap left by Jonjo Shelvey near two years ago.

3. Gylfi Sigurdsson

The main man for Swansea City; Gylfi Sigurdsson is being allowed to play with more freedom and expression than ever before under Paul Clement. Able to roam the pitch freely, Clement’s loose approach to Sigurdsson’s positional play is helping the midfielder to not only score more goals, but create more for his team. Managing to keep hold of the Icelandic midfielder was vital for the Swans in January, and with him on their books until at least the summer, Swansea City may find themselves playing in the Premier League next season.
