Wolverhampton Wanderers will be in the market for a new striker this summer as they bid for a promotion push next season.

Wolves have endured a disappointing campaign that has seen them staving off the threat of relegation for the majority of the season. Their supporters will be keen to put this season behind them, but on reflection, they will be aware that strengthening their striker department is a must if their team is to pose a threat in the promotion race.

Joe Mason is Wolves’ top goalscorer out of the natural centre forwards in the side with just four goals. The majority of their goals have come from their winger Helder Costa and centre midfielder David Edwards. Wolves boss Paul Lambert will be concerned by the lack of goals contributed by his striker and will be keen to address this in the summer.

Here are three potential signings that would add some much needed firepower:

Leonardo Ulloa – Leicester City

Ulloa has spent the last three seasons in the Premier League but the Argentine is no stranger to Championship football.

The 30-year-old made his name in England following a highly productive spell with Brighton where he scored 26 goals in 58 appearances. This convinced Leicester to bring him to the King Power Stadium. His first team chances have dwindled in conjunction with the Foxes’ success in the Premier League and will be likely to leave in the summer.

If Ulloa does become available then competition for his signing will be fierce but Wolves should try their best to secure his signature does arise. The centre forward is capable of scoring goals as well as assisting them and would fit perfectly into Lambert’s system.

Daryl Murphy – Newcastle United

Murphy has scored some crucial goals in Newcastle’s successful promotion campaign and is a popular figure at St James’ Park, but he is likely to depart in the summer.

As Newcastle prepare to make a positive impact in the Premier League next season, 34-year-old Murphy will find his first team opportunities at a premium. The Republic of Ireland international has gained himself a reputation as a reliable goalscorer in the Championship and despite his age, he has proved that he is still capable of doing the business in England’s second tier.

Murphy’s know-how and knack for scoring goals will be invaluable for a Wolves side, even if it is a signing that will be made on a short term basis.

Sam Gallagher – Southampton

Gallagher has been on loan at Blackburn Rovers this season and despite their struggles in the league, the 21-year-old has been amongst the goals at Ewood Park.

Despite his positive impact and what will be seen as many by his breakthrough season, it seems likely that he will find his first chances at St Mary’s limited and may find himself at another club next season. Whether that is on loan or on a permanent basis remains to be seen.

Either way, Wolves should take a serious look at Gallagher who has proven his ability to score goals in the Championship and still has plenty of time to develop into a stable goal threat, especially in England’s second tier.
