Reports over the weekend in the Daily Star suggested that Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a £12 million bid for Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes.

The Owls are backed by new ownership and they are expected to spend big over the summer, as they look to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The signing of Rhodes would be a signal of their ambition, but if they have £12 million available they could be better off spending it elsewhere.

Rhodes is pretty much guaranteed to score goals at Championship level, but Blackburn’s asking price is huge and in this piece we take a look at three potentially better options for Wednesday.

Dwight Gayle (Crystal Palace)

Gayle has been included regularly under Alan Pardew, but he has not been able to play up front as much as he would have been hoping for.

The 24-year-old has regularly started on the wing and that could suggest that a big money offer would convince Palace to sell.

Gayle has proven himself to be deadly in the Championship before and he looks set to lead the Eagles’ scoring charts for two years running, showing that he knows where the back of the net is.

Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)

This transfer may require Bournemouth not to achieve promotion to the Premier League, but he would be a great addition for Wednesday.

The youngster is blessed with pace and a deadly finish, making him a threat to defences at any level.

He is still 23-years-old and has room to improve, but his tally of 18 goals in 40 matches this season proves just how talented he is and the Owls would be wise to bring him in.

Patrick Bamford (Chelsea)

Bamford may look one of the most talented strikers currently playing outside the Premier League, but his chances of breaking through at Chelsea are limited.

The Blues have plenty of senior attacking options and Bamford is unlikely to get in ahead of some of their more high-profile stars.

It means that he could be up for grabs in the summer and Wednesday would have the financial strength to land him.

The England Under-21 international has scored 13 times this season and would make a cracking addition for any team looking to gain promotion to the Premier League.
