The long-term Rangers target is said to have opted against a move to Ibrox.
Rangers have missed out on the signing of long-term Ibrox target Louis Moult, according to the Scottish Sun.
The Motherwell star is out of contract in less than six months’ time and can therefore discuss a pre-contract deal with other clubs – a situation Preston North End are said to have exploited to win the race for his signature.
Moult, however, is not the only striker in such a position – here’s three others Rangers could turn to now…
Lee Gregory (Millwall)
Gregory scored prolifically in League One between 2014 and 2016, but the goals have dried up somewhat since his and Millwall’s return to the Championship. A fresh start north of the border could get the goals flowing again and Rangers can approach him from the start of January.
Gary Madine (Bolton Wanderers)
Madine has fared considerably better than Gregory since his own return to the second tier, scoring six goals and creating five for newly promoted Bolton Wanderers. The Trotters are hanging precariously above the relegation places, however, and the 27-year-old is unlikely to fancy a return to League One. Again, Rangers can begin talking to him from the turn of the year.
George Hirst (Sheffield Wednesday)
Hirst is reportedly coveted by a string of Premier League and Championship clubs, having scored 40 goals for Sheffield Wednesday and England’s youth teams last season. And Wednesday are resigned to losing the 18-year-old next summer after he snubbed a new contract at Hillsborough – where his father, David, made his name. Unlike the others on this list, Hirst’s transfer is likely to require a development fee, although it would be significantly lower for Rangers than another club in England. Negotiations can commence in 2018.
