A number of Tottenham players raised their game to the level they demonstrated last season, in a dominant 4-0 win over Stoke City.

Tottenham Hotspur certainly got their season up and running in what was a sensational 4-0 defeat of Stoke City at the Bet 365 Stadium on Saturday.

Spurs had managed to avoid defeat from their opening three matches of the season, drawing against Merseyside duo Everton and Liverpool, and narrowly beating Crystal Palace.

In truth, the club, and some of their key performers, were yet to get anywhere near top gear. But against the Potters, Spurs were at their ruthless best. Replicating some of their sensational attacking performances form last season, and once again demonstrating their defensive resilience, Tottenham won 4-0 once more at Stoke’s own ground, and there were three players who pushed their own levels very much in the right direction as the 2016/17 Premier League enters its second month.

Christian Eriksen

The Dane has been a massive disappointment in the club’s earlier matches, failing to offer anything like the usual guile and creativity that he has displayed at other times in his career. Of course, it has now emerged that Eriksen was in contract discussions during this time. It is no surprise to see the 24-year-old put in such an impressive performance in the match following the resolution of that problem.

Spurs fans will be delighted to see Eriksen back at his outstanding best, as he moved on from a difficult start to be hugely influential. The former Ajax man linked up especially well with Heung-Min Son, setting up both of the winger’s goals and he also hit the post with a fierce strike.

It looked like Heung-Min Son might have been getting pushed to the sidelines somewhat this season, as rumours flared of his future over the summer and Tottenham added attacking midfielders Moussa Sissoko and George-Kevin Nkoudou. But after Olympics disappointment, the South Korean returned to the Spurs side and continued his excellent goalscoring form for the North Londoners.

Not only did he score a brace of superb goals, making it four in his last four matches for the club stretching into last season, he also laid a vital chance on a plate for the man below, which was gratefully gobbled up.

The England international’s performance was perhaps not as impressive as the two players mentioned above, but for Kane to finally find the net after several goalless matches for club and country will be huge boost for the player and his confidence.

The 23-year-old had limited attacking chances during the game, but he couldn’t miss Heung-Min Son’s excellent cross, and he shared a relieved smile with Mauricio Pochettino as he was brought off not long after. What Kane did offer all game though was excellent link up play, and a strong physical presence.

It’s also worth remembering that the last time he got off the mark after a slow start, he was netting a hat-trick only a couple of games later.
