Could Newcastle United significantly strengthen their squad by looking at soon-to-be free agents?

Newcastle United have a very impressive squad but they will be looking to strengthen again this summer, with some tantalising players likely to be available for free in the close season.

Here we take a look at three Spaniards soon to be out of contract that their countryman Rafa Benitez could look to bring to St. James’ Park if he wants to make a statement, adding plenty more Premier League experience to his blossoming side in the process.

Santi Cazorla

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla was a regular this season before ankle surgery left him on the side-lines, and while his prolonged injury absence means his signing would be a risk, there is no doubting the 32-year-old’s quality when he is fit and firing.

Jesus Navas

Newcastle continue to be linked with new wingers so what chance Benitez bringing Manchester City man Jesus Navas to the North East?

Navas has had to make do with a bit-part role at the Etihad Stadium this season but he possesses lightening pace and would be a great option for the Magpies next year.

Xabi Alonso

The pick of the bunch if Benitez could convince him to reunite for one last shot at the Premier League, Xabi Alonso would offer the composure and quality to immediately transform Newcastle’s squad.

While there is talk that the former Spanish international will retire when his contract with Bayern Munich expires, if Benitez admits his mistake in parting company with Alonso at Anfield, there could be a chance for one last hurrah in England.
