Sheffield Wednesday came desperately close to securing promotion to the top flight last season.

Sheffield Wednesday came within one game of reaching the Premier League last season, and it was only a moment of the highest quality that denied them promotion.

With Carlos Carvalhal keeping the majority of his squad in tact over the summer, it seems likely that they will be in the mix for a top six spot once again this term. But if they fall short once again, it may be slightly harder for the Owls to keep that squad together as there are several players who could undoubtedly make an impact at the highest level.

Here are three of the current Wednesday squad that look destined to step up a level in the future, whether that be with the Owls or following a transfer.

Keiren Westwood

The 31-year-old has already enjoyed a spell in the top flight during his career, but it is difficult to imagine that he will not get the chance to add to his 19 Premier League appearances before he hangs up his gloves. The Republic of Ireland international has been sensational since joining Sheffield Wednesday. His shot-stopping ability is arguably unrivalled in the second tier, and his consistency is a key reason why the Owls are always expected to be in the promotion mix.

Tom Lees

While several members of the Owls squad have vast amounts of Premier League experience, one player still awaiting that chance is centre-back Tom Lees. The 25-year-old has been so impressive since moving across Yorkshire from Leeds and is starting to establish himself as a leader within the team. If he can continue to improve in the next couple of years, it is surely fair to say that a top flight team will be willing to take a chance on him.

Fernando Forestieri

After helping Watford reach the top flight, Fernando Forestieri moved to Hillsborough without appearing at the highest level. On his day, he is virtually unplayable and has the ability to play as either a striker or as an attacking midfielder looking to dictate the tempo of the game. As it would take a brave team in the top flight to sign a Championship player to be their talisman, it seems more likely that inspiring a team to promotion will be his best chance of playing in the Premier League as being the focal point of the team appears to bring the best out of him.
