The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach is being linked with the vacant Swansea City post.
Carlos Carvalhal is a serious contender for the Swansea City job, as reported by both the Sun and Wales Online. The Portuguese coach left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent on Christmas Eve, and was allegedly spotted at Swansea’s 5-0 Boxing Day defeat at Liverpool.
But could he return to Wednesday for any of his old players? Here’s three who could feature on Carvalhal’s shortlist…
Adam Reach – The versatile winger only missed two league games under Carvalhal – who suggested that Wednesday could one day triple the £5 million they paid for Reach’s services after signing him 18 months ago – and on current form wouldn’t look out of place in the Premier League. Swansea’s wide players have struggled to produce this season, whereas Reach has scored four goals and made another six in 24 outings.
Fernando Forestieri – It could be argued that Carvalhal would still be in a job had Forestieri not missed all but two of Wednesday’s league matches this campaign. The Argentina-born player was the Owls’ main source of goals in his previous two Hillsborough campaigns, but is not expected back much before February at the earliest. A fit Forestieri would be an asset to most bottom-half top flight teams.
Gary Hooper – Carvalhal pursued Hooper for months before eventually landing him on an initial loan deal from Norwich City, and after an injury-hit 2016-17 season the striker is once again justifying that decision. Hooper has scored 11 goals – a tally which is all the more impressive given his lack of service at times – and made another three in 25 outings this term. He’s previously scored in the Champions League, and could be an effective foil for Tammy Abraham or Wilfried Bony.
