Kieran Trippier isn’t the only Tottenham Hotspur player that could be playing for Atletico Madrid next season because Christian Eriksen could join him in Spain if recent reports are true.
Atletico Madrid’s phone number wouldn’t be too far down Daniel Levy’s recent call history because Kieran Tripper made a switch from Tottenham Hotspur to the Spanish capital on Wednesday.
There will be a number of ex-Tottenham players plying their trade in Madrid next season with Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and now Trippier, who be playing for Real’s rivals, set to compete in La Liga next term.
But could Christian Eriksen join them?
Italian outlet Alfredo Pedulla have claimed that Spurs’ creative spark is attracting the interest of Atletico Madrid, who have joined Real in the race for his signature.
Following Tottenham’s Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in June, Eriksen stated on his personal Instagram account that he is ‘ready for a new challenge’ in his career and any move away from North London would have to be a ‘step up’, as quoted by the Guardian.
Firstly, would a move to Atletico Madrid be a ‘step up’ for the Denmark international? Spurs have proven that they can compete with the likes of Atletico when it comes to performing in the Champions League.
Plus, if the roles were reversed and Diego Simeone’s side were in the Premier League, would they fare any better than Mauricio Pochettino’s men? If so, it wouldn’t that much better given the dominance of Liverpool and champions Manchester City.
Secondly, Eriksen seemingly hinted at wanting to play for a club that is going to win trophies, well Atletico just sold their top marksman, Antoine Griezmann to La Liga rivals Barcelona for £107 million [BBC Sport].
It is the equivalent of Spurs selling Harry Kane to a Liverpool or a Man City. And it isn’t exactly a sign that the trophies will be flooding in if you are parting ways with one of your best players, regardless of what comes through the door.
Thirdly, After all the talk about Eriksen’s future in recent times, it would put a dampener on things if he ended up playing for a Madrid-based, but ended up at the Wanda Metropolitano rather than the Bernabeu.
Plus, and most importantly, Spurs have showcased in the transfer market so far that they are ready to compete for the best players and take that next step up themselves ahead of the new campaign. A player like Tanguy Ndombele, given his qualities, would compliment a player like Eriksen and improve Spurs squad as a whole.
