Three reasons Haller could ‘go on a run’ as Moyes hopes

There isn’t too much for West Ham fans to get excited about right now, but their side did beat Charlton 3-0 in midweek.

The EFL Cup represents the Hammers’ most likely source of silverware this season but there are far more pressing concerns on and off the pitch.

One potential sign of life is Sebastien Haller’s quickfire double against the Addicks, which prompted David Moyes to tell the Times he hopes the Frenchman can ‘go on a run’ now.

Looking at the glass half full – someone has to! – we’ve got three reasons Haller could do that to offer a ray of light amid the gloom around the London Stadium right now.

Settled second season

Many foreign imports struggle in their first season in the Premier League before settling in more second time around.

Haller will hope that a year to get used to life in east London will stand him in better stead.

He is still the same talented forward who got the fans so excited last summer, and now he’s had a year to figure out what the Premier League is all about.

Haller wouldn’t be the first player to need a year to warm up.

Moyes’ bizarre record

In both his spells at West Ham, David Moyes hasn’t really brought about noticeable improvement across the pitch.

What he has managed to do is draw talismanic performances from one forward; Marko Arnautovic first time around, Michail Antonio last season.

Perhaps Haller could be his man this season.

It’s not quite clear why but Moyes’ negative brand of football doesn’t seem to hamper his main striker at West Ham. Haller may benefit from that.

Less expectation

Last summer, Haller came in as West Ham’s record signing, expected to carry the goalscoring burden.

It’s fair to say he didn’t live up to that expectation.

Now, Antonio is seen as the main man, which may help take the pressure off Haller.

The ire of the fans is being directed elsewhere right now, which could allow Haller to get on with his business quietly and effectively.
