Sunderland are bottom of the Premier League without a win to their name, but it is not all bad…

If you are a Sunderland fan right now, you probably are not feeling too great.

The Black Cats are bottom of the Premier League, they are yet to win a league game, and have more injury problems than points.

However, fear not Sunderland faithful – here are five reasons for you to turn those frowns upside down.

This has happened before and had a happy ending

As the old saying goes, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, unless you are Sunderland.

The Black Cats are the masters of escapology, they have lived the Great Escape, they know how to get out of trouble when it looks like all hope is lost.

Yes, these are dark times for David Moyes’ team, but there were also dark times for Sam Allardyce, Dick Advocaat, Gus Poyet and Paolo Di Canio. The Scot could become the fifth manager in five seasons to keep Sunderland in the Premier League.

Experience counts in relegation battles, and Sunderland have it in abundance.

Still in the EFL Cup

In 2014, Gus Poyet guided the Wearsiders to the League Cup final. If you were to ask most Sunderland fans what their best recent memory of the club is, they would probably say that weekend they took over the capital and nearly won a trophy.

They may have lost the final, but that did not matter to Sunderland fans, who were just proud to see their team at Wembley.

That could happen again this season. Moyes’ team have manoeuvred their way to round four, having knocked out Shrewsbury and QPR, and a win against Southampton could have them dreaming again.

Yann M’Vila might arrive in January

Remember how sad it was when Yann M’Vila left and never completed a permanent move to the Stadium of Light this summer?

Well with his contract set to expire at Rubin Kazan in January, the Frenchman could return on a free at the start of 2017. There is no doubt that Sunderland have missed M’Vila, whose presence in midfield has not been replaced, and a return to the club would certainly lift Black Cats spirits.

Hypothetically, Sunderland could survive, reach a cup final and get M’Vila back, and that would be a successful season.

Remember, things can only get better.
