Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United future is in doubt… should Celtic be his next destination?

England and Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney faces an uncertain future after a disappointing season at Old Trafford.

Rooney was a bit-part player under Jose Mourinho and needs a move to revitalise his career.

One problem is his huge Manchester United wages, and he has one year remaining on his contract.

Yet there comes a point where Rooney should put happiness above money, and that is why he should consider a move to Celtic.

Here are three reasons why Rooney should consider a move…

Score goals again

Rooney’s lack of regular football has seen his clinical touch diminish, and a move to Celtic can help him get it back.

Scott Sinclair’s prolific form showed that the competition in Scotland is not as tough as in England, and at 31 Rooney could do with a change of scene.

Moving to China is an unlikely option for Rooney, and a switch to Scotland means the striker would barely have to uproot his young family.

In Scotland Rooney can re-discover his golden touch and start enjoying his football once again, and Celtic could offer him the big stage of the Champions League to show he has still got it.

Brendan Rodgers

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is a manager Wayne Rooney has plenty of admiration for.

Speaking to SkySports about Daniel Sturridge in 2014, Rooney said: “He has turned into a top, top striker and it’s great to see. Brendan Rodgers deserves a lot of credit for his progress.”

Now Rooney could be hoping Rodgers’ coaching can help him get back to his very best.

He’s a Celtic fan

Perhaps the most important factor of all, Rooney is a self confessed Celtic admirer.

He even went into the Celtic away end to see them beat rivals Rangers in 2006.

Goal report his comments in 2008: “I’d always wanted to see a derby, though, so I went up two seasons ago – into the away end with all the Celtic supporters – and it was unbelievable.

“The fans were brilliant with me. As soon as I walked in, someone spotted me and I was handed loads of scarves and Celtic hats. It was all good fun and it was great to see Celtic win.”

Rooney knows all about the passion of the fixture and what Celtic are all about – and a move to Glasgow could be just what he needs to bring his fire back.
