HITC Sport takes a look at three players from Italy’s Serie A which Newcastle United should target this summer.

Coming as a surprise to nobody, Newcastle United have had an excellent season in the Championship since their relegation from the Premier League at the end of the last campaign. After managing to keep hold of highly-rated manager Rafa Benitez, many expected the Magpies to simply spring straight back up this season, and the club look all set to do that, currently leading the Championship promotion race by a single point.
Should they achieve promotion at the end of the season, Newcastle United will likely need to dip into the transfer market, in order to strengthen their squad for Premier League football. With this in mind, HITC Sport has taken a look at three potential targets from Italy’s top division, Serie A, whom the Magpies could target this summer.
1. Dries Mertens – Napoli

After interest by Newcastle United in Mertens was reported earlier this month by The Chronicle, the Belgian midfielder could well be top of any potential summer transfer targets lists at St James Park. Along with Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens has lit-up Serie A this season, and it would be a smart – if ambitious -move to try tempt him away from the Italian top flight. However, if they do want to secure the Belgian’s signature, they will likely have to pay a heavy price.
2. Daniele De Rossi – AS Roma

The Roma legend is out of contract in the summer, and could be tempted by a move abroad, especially if the offer of Premier League football is on the table. The legendary midfielder has made over 500 appearances for Roma, as well as picking up over 100 caps for Italy. Could his experience and footballing know-how offer something to Newcastle United, as they bid to keep themselves in the Premier League next season?
3. Keisuke Honda – AC Milan
Keisuke Honda – AC Milan
The Japanese international is also a free agent in the summer, and could offer Newcastle United another attacking option behind the striker. Quality with the ball at his feet, Keisuke Honda has at times failed to live up to the hype that surrounded him after his move to Milan from CSKA Moscow. However, with no transfer fee necessary, the Japanese attacking midfielder could add some real quality to a Newcastle United squad destined for the top division next season.
