Eric Lichaj has become a free agent after departing English Championship club Hull City. We look at three MLS teams who could potentially benefit from signing the defender.
Philadelphia Union
Shortly after Hull City announced that Lichaj would be leaving the club, supporters of the Philadelphia Union took to Twitter to discuss the possibility of signing the 16-time American international.
Philadelphia either declined or traded three defenders prior to the 2020 season. As a result, Lichaj’s potential arrival at the Union would provide greater defensive options. Furthermore, it would appear that Lichaj’s wealth of experience seems especially appealing to supporters of the U.
New England Revolution
New England’s 2019 form improved after Bruce Arena was appointed as Sporting Director and Head Coach. They will be hoping to continue their progress and made some noticeable roster moves ahead of the 2020 season.
Lichaj was linked with a move to New England in 2017 and The Revs may now be tempted to re-unite Lichaj with his former USMNT coach, Arena.

Chicago Fire
The most romantic of a potential Eric Lichaj MLS move may be signing for the Chicago Fire. Lichaj was born in Illinois and played for the Fire’s youth team and USL side, Chicago Fire Premier. However, Lichaj did not play for the first team – moving to England to sign for Aston Villa.
From a practical point of view, Lichaj would be an alternative to the aging Jonathan Bornstein in Chicago’s back line.

Whether Lichaj joins MLS remains to be seen, but these three teams could benefit from his signature, should the opportunity present itself. Lichaj is not on the league’s allocation list and would be immediately available for the upcoming MLS Is Back Tournament.
