Liverpool are down to just three senior central defensive options after the sale of Dejan Lovren to Zenit earlier this summer.

There might not be many Reds fans who disagreed with the decision to sell the Croat, but his departure leaves Jurgen Klopp slightly light at the back.

The German may decide not to dip into the market for a new centre-back, but given he had to play Fabinho and Jordan Henderson at the back at times last season, a new recruit might be wise.

We’ve picked out three realistic options if Liverpool dip into the market for a Lovren replacement.

Kristoffer Ajer

The Daily Star recently reported Liverpool’s interest in Celtic defender Ajer.

The Daily Record claim the Bhoys are in no rush to sell, but the Parkhead club’s early European exit may convince him his future lies elsewhere.

He’s a towering presence and at just 22, he’s got plenty of time to improve.

Many will make the comparison with Virgil van Dijk in terms of a defender linked with Anfield having played for Celtic.

What it means in real terms is Ajer is already familiar with the pressure of playing for a huge club where winning every week is the demand.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

Diego Carlos

Marca reported Liverpool interest in the Sevilla defender as early as April and he has since lifted the Europa League.

That involved knocking Manchester United out in the semi-final. Carlos gave away a rash early penalty but thereafter his physical performance caught the eye.

Perhaps he’s a little impetuous at present, but he’d be a very creditable fourth-choice central defender.

Ben White

The Liverpool Echo report White was scouted extensively by Liverpool while he was on loan at Leeds last season.

They claim a swoop is more likely next summer, but Klopp does need a defender for the coming season.

White looks every inch a future England defender, assured in his passing with a great reading of the game.

It would be a surprise if Liverpool paid the money for him this summer – especially after he signed a new contract recently – but they’re clearly a fan of him.
