Everton may look to trim their squad by selling some fringe players this summer.

Everton’s disappointing season has seen both Sam Allardyce and Steve Walsh lose their jobs, and whilst Farhad Moshiri has brought in PSV Eindhoven’s Marcel Brands to replace Walsh, the search for Allardyce’s successor continues.

Signings will be crucial for the Toffees if they are to push anywhere close to the top six, but so will offloading fringe players – and here are three misfits who may be moved on this summer.

Ashley Williams

Williams was a solid signing on paper when he arrived from Swansea City in 2016, but his advancing years meant Everton wouldn’t get a lot out of him over a considerable period. Sadly, it seems that Everton only got a decent 2016-17 campaign out of him, as Williams was terrible last season and certainly needs to be sold and replaced this summer – if the Toffees can find a buyer.

Luke Garbutt

Left back Garbutt was highly touted in his teenage years, but he has failed to kick on and it has become abundantly clear this season that he has no future at Goodison Park. Despite having no left back heading into the season, Garbutt wasn’t registered for the Premier League by Ronald Koeman, and was then frozen out by Sam Allardyce too. Now 25, Garbutt must leave the Toffees this summer in order to play first-team football elsewhere.

Muhamed Besic of Everton is put under pressure from Darron Gibson of Sunderland during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Everton and Sunderland at Goodison Park on September 20,...

Muhamed Besic

Besic – a 2014 signing from Ferencvaros in Hungary after impressing for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup in Brazil – spent the second half of this season on loan with Middlesbrough, having failed to nail down a first-team spot with Everton. In truth, Besic may have his fans at Goodison Park thanks to his tenacious nature, but he hasn’t been consistent enough and doesn’t have the quality Everton need to kick on, with a summer exit looking inevitable.
