Three players who fit Pochettino’s specific Tottenham idea

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want an English goalkeeper this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for new signings this summer, and fans are hoping for some big names after nearly 18 months without an addition.

Few fans will be excited about the prospect of a third goalkeeper arriving though. Michel Vorm is leaving when his contract expires later this month, so Tottenham need another stopper.

The London Evening Standard report that Tottenham have a specific idea in mind, as they’ll likely go for an English goalkeeper in order to ease their homegrown quota fears.

Here are three players who Spurs can look at this summer to back up Hugo Lloris and Paulo Gazzaniga…

Alex McCarthy

The Southampton stopper, 29, earned a first England cap last year, but lost his place with the Saints this year. Angus Gunn replaced McCarthy, and it looks like being a tough ask for him to reclaim the shirt.

The Mirror claimed last year that Tottenham were interested in McCarthy, and they may have a chance to land him now. Having dropped to second choice at Southampton, this may be the right time to strike, handing the former QPR and Crystal Palace goalkeeper a return to London.

Fraser Forster

Another Southampton goalkeeper ticks the boxes, this time in the form of Fraser Forster. The 31-year-old also has England caps to his name, and was rated as one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers in his first three seasons with the Saints, having joined from Celtic in 2014.

However, he was dropped in December 2017 and has remarkably played just once since that. Forster will surely move on this summer, and having been wanted by Pochettino in 2014 according to the Daily Mail, landing the giant stopper now wouldn’t be a huge surprise.

David Button

An interesting name would be David Button. The 30-year-old only played four Premier League games for Brighton this past season, filling in for Mathew Ryan when he headed off to the Asia Cup with Australia in January.

Something of a forgotten man already at Brighton despite only arriving from Fulham last summer, Button is an attractive option for Spurs. He has experience at 30, he’s accustomed to the backup role, and he’d count as a player trained by Spurs having come up through the Tottenham ranks – something some may have forgotten, given that he only ever played once for Tottenham.
