We take a look at three players who desperately need to impress at Everton this season.
There is no denying that these are changing times at the Goodison Park. A lot of fans would have been highly optimistic when new majority owner Farhad Moshiri, speaking to the Guardian, said: “I give them whatever I have”.
But, only a handful from Merseyside would have expected a transfer window which saw seven major signings, three among which were for £20 million and more. However, changing times beckon a more ruthless approach, and the following players face a make or break season on the Blue side of Liverpool.
Kevin Mirallas scores for Everton
#3 Kevin Mirallas
Kevin has been at the Goodison since 2013 and despite his initial promise and obvious talent he has somehow managed to underperform in every other season since his debut campaign. Now 29, this is surely the last chance the Belgian winger has to kick on before he is shoved off the boat.
He might just have signed a shiny 3-year-contract, but in modern football, it matters little.
Ashley Williams of Everton celebrates after scoring his team’s second goal
#2 Ashley Williams
Everton conceded 44 goals last season in the League and given the competition for European places, they can’t afford to do so again this year. Although Ashley Williams might have been the pick of the central defenders last season, the Welsh stopper had a relatively average season given his standards with Swansea and the national team.
With a young and promising centre half beside him this season (Will Keane), the 32-year-old would be expected to polish his act and be back to his dependable best. If not, Ronald Koeman may well look to buy another first choice centre back, and that can’t possibly be good news for a 33-year-old.
Wayne Rooney of England talks to the media during a Press Conference
#1 Wayne Rooney
*Sigh* Wayne Rooney’s move back to his old stomping ground is undoubtedly one for the romantics, but there is no denying that the former England captain is on the wane. During his last season at Manchester United, all everyone seemed to talk about was how important he was with young players and as a voice in the dressing room.
Although those are excellent qualities to have (for a coach), a lot more would be expected from Rooney in the Blue shirt. The club might not usher him out of the back door before the end of his 2-year contract, but will Wayne Rooney be willing to play a bit part role for any club?
