However, so far this season, The Boro have shown the grit, fight and determination required to survive in this division. Here’s three players we think could be key to the Boro’s bid to stay up.

Widely considered to be ‘Mr Middlesbrough’, Ben Gibson is one a huge fan favourite at the Riverside stadium. His fine defensive performances, and his vocal leadership at the heart of Boro’s backline, have earned him many plaudits, some even suggesting that Gibson could well be the next John Terry. Hard in the tackle, strong in the air and chipping in with goals at important times, Ben Gibson is going to be key to Middlesbrough this season.

For Atlanta last season, Marten de Roon made more tackles than any other player in the Serie A, making the Dutchmen the obvious choice for Karanka as he looked to add a midfield battler. Already this year, de Roon has proved what an asset he is to the side, forcing his way into the team, squeezing out the often reliable Adam Clayton. Experienced at the top level of Italy and at International level, de Roon is a wise head on young shoulders at only 25, he is likely to play an essential part in Boro’s survival bid.

Stewart Downing

The former West Ham and Liverpool midfielder shocked many when he made his return to the Riverside Stadium last season, especially after such an excellent season with the Hammers. It was no surprise to see him play a huge role in Boro’s promotion to the Premier League, and with years of experience of top flight football under his belt, Downing will likely play a key part in keeping Boro up this season. Playing a more central role in Karanka’s 4-2-3-1, Downing is now the main creator for Middlesbrough; a similar role to the one he played for West Ham before his departure. If he can use his experience of unlocking defences at this level, Boro could certainly stay up this year.
