Steven Gerrard is likely to be active in January as Rangers continue to mount title challenge.
Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have improved dramatically since the Liverpool and England legend took over at Ibrox. But if they are to catch Old Firm rivals Celtic, more additions are required.
Indeed, the likes of Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield and Borna Barisic have all particularly impressed so far after joining the club in January. But if more are to join, some must leave to make way.
Here are three current first-team stars that could leave next month as Gerrard looks to make room for possible new signings:
Carlos Pena
Hardly surprising. The Mexico international is set to return to Rangers after his loan spell with Mexican side Necaxa has failed to see him make an impact.
A costly recruit brought in by Pedro Caixinha, Pena’s enormous wages remain on the bill at Ibrox. Gerrard has to offload him in January, given he has hardly shown he is worth the money paid so far.
Lee Wallace
Left-back Wallace has had a troublesome time with injury, and has remained on the sidelines since the dressing-room fracas that involved Kenny Miller after a defeat to Celtic last season.
The veteran’s contract ends in the summer and if Rangers are to receive a fee for the ex-Hearts defender’s services, he must be sold in the January transfer window. The question remains, though, will Rangers find a buyer?
Wes Foderingham
The ex-Swindon Town goalkeeper was the club’s first choice last season, until McGregor was brought back to Ibrox and has since starred between the sticks. Perhaps slightly harsh, he will feel he is too good to warm the bench.
A move back down south could be on for Foderingham, with Championship clubs being interested in his services in the past.
