The Telegraph reports that Leeds United have approached Steve Bruce, the Aston Villa manager, to gauge his interest in the vacancy at Elland Road.

Leeds are said to have made Marcelo Bielsa their number one target, although Bruce’s record at Championship level makes the Englishman a desirable alternative.

But which players could Bruce target if he’s appointed at Elland Road – aside from the obvious, Abel Hernandez – and could he raid Aston Villa?

HITC takes a look at three potential options…

Sam Johnstone (Manchester United)

The Manchester United goalkeeper was twice loaned to Villa during Bruce’s tenure, although the Villans’ financial situation looks to have ended their hopes of a permanent deal. Reports suggest Johnstone could cost as much as £6.5 million, which may yet deter Leeds as well. That said, the Whites are in the market for a new number one this summer and could see the 25-year-old as a worthy investment.

Curtis Davies (Derby County)

One of Bruce’s central defensive linchpins at Hull, Davies’ Derby future is also uncertain amid reports the Rams are attempting to raise funds for new boss Frank Lampard. Though 33, the Londoner’s experience and leadership qualities are sure to be welcomed by Leeds, who were something of a soft touch defensively last term. It is claimed Derby could deal at £3 million – a fee that may be deemed slightly excessive.

Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa)

Managed by Bruce at Sunderland as well Villa, Hourihane scored 11 goals and made another two from central midfield last season. The Villans, however, are in no position to refuse serious offers this summer, and the 27-year-old could become one of their most sought-after players. Leeds are short of quality in Hourihane’s position, which could put the Irishman high on Bruce’s list.
