Three players Nottingham Forest could target as Henri Lansbury’s replacement – including Leeds United outcast

Nottingham Forest could do worse than to consider the following names from Cardiff City, Leeds United and Burton Albion.

Nottingham Forest captain Henri Lansbury looks destined to leave the City Ground this month, with a string of clubs said to be circling around the soon-to-be out-of-contract midfielder.

Lansbury could be a difficult man to replace, having scored six goals for the struggling Reds this season.

Forest, though, could do worse than to consider the following three names as they prepare to replace the 26-year-old.

Peter Whittingham (Cardiff City)

Like Lansbury, Cardiff’s Whittingham is also out of contract in the summer and may fancy a change of scenery after a decade in South Wales. A move to Trentside would bring the 32-year-old, who has 80 Championship goals to his name, closer to his Nuneaton roots.

Alex Mowatt (Leeds United)

Once a player full of promise, Leeds’ Mowatt has lost his way of late and looks to be on his way out of Elland Road when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign – if not sooner. With several ahead of him in the pecking order at Leeds, a fresh start for the 21-year-old could be just what his career needs. Alternatively, Mowatt’s Whites teammate Luke Murphy is almost certainly available.

Jackson Irvine (Burton Albion)

One of the few midfielders to have outscored Lansbury in this season’s Championship, Irvine is already said to have caught the eye of several sides in England’s top two tiers. The imposing 23-year-old has excelled under former Forest striker Nigel Clough, who could steer him in the right direction should the offers come in. However, having signed a three-year deal last summer, Irvine is likely to cost the most of all three.
