HITC Sport have been looking at some former Newcastle United players who fans might like to see back, including two midfielders at Crystal Palace.

Just as football fans, pundits and journalists expected, Newcastle United are flying away at the top of the Championship. Five points clear of Brighton and Hove Albion, the Magpies look set for a swift return to the Premier League.

After a miserable season under Steve McClaren, Newcastle United have been rejuvenated by new manager Rafa Benitez, as the Spaniard seeks to rebuild a team which has been battered about over the last few years. With their focus now on promotion, Newcastle United fans will be excited about the future.

But the past hasn’t all been bad. The Toon Army have seen some fantastic players in a Black and White shirt over the years, and with that in mind, HITC Sport has been taking a look at some ex-players Newcastle United fans might like to see back at St James Park. 1. James Milner

Liverpool’s James Milner

The Liverpool midfielder made 94 appearances for Newcastle during four years with the club between 2004-2008, and has made a career out of being one of the best utility players in the Premier League. Able to play a whole host of positions, be it on the wing, through the middle, or even as a full-back, James Milner is a positive addition to any squad, and could add a touch of top flight experience to a Newcastle United side looking set for promotion.

2. Andros Townsend

Many Newcastle United fans were keen to see their former winger, Andros Townsend, return to the club in January, but were left disappointed when the Magpies did no business at all on the final day of the January window. Wanting that extra bit of quality to be best equipped for their potential return to the Premier League, we might not have seen the end of Rafa Benitez’s pursuit of Andros Townsend.

3. Yohan Cabaye

Potentially an unpopular opinion, but surely Yohan Cabaye would add some quality and goalscoring threat to the centre of the Newcastle United midfield? The Frenchman, who departed Newcastle United for Paris Saint-Germain, came back to England to join Crystal Palace under former Magpies manager, Alan Pardew. Drawing a lot of hate from a lot of Newcastle United fans, it may well be unlikely to see Cabaye return to the Toon. But if Benitez can get him playing the way he did while in a black a white shirt, Cabaye would surely be worth a shot?
