Three players Everton should give new contracts to after Ross Barkley

The midfielder is reportedly in line to receive a new contract at Goodison Park.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton are working hard at getting Ross Barkley secured to a new deal at the club.

The midfielder has started the season on fire for the Blues, with three impressive performances helping them to their best start in a decade.

While his international future is under debate, that is not the case at Goodison Park, with them determined to get him signed to a new contract that not only reflects his performances but his standing in the current squad.

Should they reach an agreement, which seems likely to happen, the Toffees should not stop there and instead look to get other players tied down to new terms.

Here are three more players that should be handed extended deals by manager Ronald Koeman:

Romelu Lukaku

The obvious one of the three, Everton should be doing everything they can to ensure that they can tie down Lukaku.

After losing John Stones to Manchester City, keeping the Belgian striker is a major boost to their hopes this season.

Their spending should have confirmed the club’s ambition and getting him to agree to an extended stay would be another indication of the changing times under Farhad Moshiri.

Gerard Deulofeu

Another youngster the Blues should be looking to build their current team around for the future.

With bags of pace and more than a few tricks up his sleeve, he has already shown he could be a star and is expected to develop under Koeman’s guidance.

His current deal runs out in 2018, the same time as Barkley, and a new deal would indicate he has as big a part to play in future as his teammate.

Gareth Barry

Something of a controversial choice perhaps, but all of those young players will need an experienced head around them.

Barry may be 35, but he has shown at the beginning of the season that he has a big role to play this year, topping the club’s midfield stats in several areas.

His deal expires next summer, and another short extension could be a smart move, at least while the club finds the dominant central midfielder they want to replace him.
