Three players David Wagner could target if he’s made Celtic’s next manager

Celtic are being linked with a move for Wagner, who left Huddersfield Town in January.

The former Huddersfield Town manager, David Wagner, is a candidate for the Celtic manager’s job, according to the Sunday Mirror (April 14, page 55).

But would the German-American bring any of his old players with him to Celtic Park?

Here’s three who could emerge as targets if Wagner joins the Bhoys this summer…

Terence Kongolo (Huddersfield)

Celtic could lose centre-backs, Dedryck Boyata (end of contract) and Filip Benkovic (loan), at the end of the season, creating a gap to fill. And Kongolo, who Wagner initially brought to Huddersfield on loan from Monaco 15 months ago, would be a worthy replacement. The Netherlands international is quick, imposing and left-footed, which would balance out the Bhoys’ back line. The £18 million Huddersfield are said to have paid for him a year ago (Transfermarkt) is a potential stumbling block, however.

Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield)

Scott Brown may have signed up until 2021, but he’s not getting any younger (or better for that matter). At 28, Mooy has five years on the Celtic captain, and could succeed him for years to come. The once-reported Rangers target (The Herald Sun) was one of Wagner’s first Huddersfield signings and is arguably the on-field catalyst of their recent ascent.

Izzy Brown (Chelsea)

Celtic’s attacking midfield area is another which could be left light this summer, with the loans of Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke due to expire. And signing Brown, one of Huddersfield’s key players in the second half of their promotion season, would help to soften to blow. The Chelsea-owned player has suffered an injury-ravaged couple of seasons on loan to Brighton and Leeds, and could be rejuvenated in Scotland.
