West Bromwich Albion are said to want talks with the 60-year-old.
West Bromwich Albion will hold talks with Chris Hughton about succeeding Darren Moore next week, according to The Telegraph. As well as boasting an impressive CV, the veteran boss has an extensive list of contacts. But could he put it to use to sign the following old players, currently at Rangers, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, if he’s appointed?
James Tavernier (Rangers)
Already linked with a summer move to the Hawthorns, the Rangers captain may remain on Hughton’s radar. It was under the prospective West Brom boss that Tavernier made his debut for Newcastle United, while a new right-back is expected at the Hawthorns as Tyrone Mears and Mason Holgate head for the exit.
Isaiah Brown (Leeds United, on loan from Chelsea)
Brown’s career has so far failed to reach the heights predicted at the time of his departure from Albion’s academy six years ago. And another loan spell could be on the cards after a season of – mostly fitness-related – struggle at Leeds. The Chelsea winger previously helped Huddersfield to promotion via the play-offs, prompting Hughton to bring him to Brighton. And with Jacob Murphy and Jefferson Montero due back at their parent clubs, a reunion in the Black Country is not unlikely.
Gary Hooper (released by Sheffield Wednesday)
As West Brom prepare for Dwight Gayle’s return to Newcastle – alongside Murphy – a new source of goals should be top of Hughton’s list. And while the 60-year-old may have an eye on Brighton’s dealings should Glenn Murray become available, other targets – Hooper perhaps – must be considered. Hughton signed the prolific Sheffield Wednesday striker at Norwich and could be tempted by his lack of transfer fee. Though 31 and with an unfavourable fitness record in recent years, many Owls fans didn’t want Hooper to leave.
