Nottingham Forest have reportedly made an approach for the Burton Albion boss, who has also managed at Sheffield United and Derby County.
Nottingham Forest have requested to hold talks with their former player Nigel Clough regarding the club’s managerial vacancy (BBC Sport).
Clough has already admitted a desire to manage the Reds one day, and though the Burton Albion boss may look to defect for a few years, with the club seemingly in turmoil, the lure of the City Ground may prove hard to resist.
And were the 50-year-old to make the move this month, it’s possible he could return for a few of his old charges, from previous clubs including Sheffield United and Derby County, ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
Here are three potential options:
Kyle McFadzean (Burton Albion)

Signed by Clough for Burton last summer, the former Sheffield United youngster – whose brother, Callum, was previously managed by the 50-year-old – has been the Brewers’ standout performer this season, according to WhoScored.com. Forest’s defence has been pretty woeful this season and, with Matt Mills now sidelined, a commanding presence such as McFadzean could be of use.
Kieron Freeman (Sheffield United)

The Forest academy graduate, who played under Clough at both Derby County and Sheffield United, has excelled since being pushed further upfield by Blades boss Chris Wilder, scoring seven goals and creating three in 29 appearances this season. The 24-year-old is out of contract in June, however, and a cut-price return to the City Ground may appeal.
Craig Bryson (Derby County)

Clough brought Bryson to Pride Park five-and-a-half-years ago, during which time the Scot has developed into, arguably, one of the division’s top central midfielders. However, the 30-year-old may feel that a change of scenery is required, having made just 13 Championship starts all season. Henri Lansbury’s departure from Forest could be Bryson’s ticket to regular game time.
