With Rangers now on the lookout for a new manager to replace former boss Mark Warburton, HITC Sport has been taking a look at some of the men who have been linked with, or nearly took, the reigns at Ibrox.

As one of the biggest club’s in the United Kingdom, Rangers has attracted big names from all over the world of football over the years, but which managers will have Rangers fans wondering “what could have been?”…

1. Felix Magath

Despite having a torrid time in charge of London club Fulham, Felix Magath’s managerial career is pretty nicely decorated. Winning Bundesliga titles with Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich, as well as leading Stuttgart to an Intertoto Cup win in 2002, the German manager has a proven track record, and nearly joined Rangers in 2015, according to The Mirror. With the German now managing Chinese side Shandong Luneng, Rangers fans might be breathing a sigh of relief after missing out on the German.

2. Gennaro Gattuso

How incredible would this be? Italian legend Gennaro Gattuso, who played at Rangers in his early years, has been quoted by the BBC as saying that it would be a dream to become the manager at Ibrox one day. Now managing Serie B side Pisa, Gattuso is now building his managerial credentials up slowly but surely, and could well be set to return to Ibrox one day.

3. Sir Alex Ferguson

One can only wonder how different history may have been should Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson have joined the Glasgow giants instead of the Manchester club all those years ago, with the Scotsman apparently just hours away from signing a contract with Rangers in 1986, having been on the Gers playing staff earlier in his career before moving into management.

Speaking to the Scottish Herald, Sir Alex Ferguson admitted how close he was to joining Rangers, before choosing the project at Manchester United. After a difficult start, Ferguson transformed United into arguably the biggest team in world football. Could he have done the same for Rangers?
