Newcastle United have had an excellent record of luring players down to the Championship this season, but perhaps they should look lower down also.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez will surely be identifying targets already ahead of a crucial summer window that is likely to culminate in the start of a Premier League campaign.

While the Toon Army may crave some marquee signings ahead of their potential return to the top flight, there may be some lower league gems that deserve a chance at a higher level.

With that in mind, here is a look at three lower league stars that Newcastle should consider targeting this summer…

Josh Morris (Scunthorpe United)

Josh Morris has undoubtedly enjoyed a tremendous season with Scunthorpe United, scoring 19 goals and contributing 11 assists from midfield for the Iron. The 25-year-old should be coming into the best years of his career, and joining Newcastle would be less of a gamble given the strength they already boast in the middle of the park.

Conor Chaplin (Portsmouth)

Conor Chaplin appears to be one for the future, having scored eight times for League Two high-flyers Portsmouth. The 20-year-old has plenty of time to develop and would be learning from a tremendous talent in Dwight Gayle if the Magpies decided on making a move.

Billy Sharp (Sheffield United)

Perhaps the name that supporters would need the most convincing about, but Billy Sharp is enjoying a sensational season with Sheffield United, scoring 26 in 39 league games. It would undoubtedly be a gamble to hand the 31-year-old another chance at the highest level, but his ability to find the back of the net would surely make him a decent option to have to bring on from time to time.
