Sheffield Wednesday are looking for a new manager after sacking Carlos Carvalhal last weekend.
The Portuguese manager left the South Yorkshire club after seven league games without a win left the Owls in 15th place.
Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca was the favourite with Sky Bet at the time of writing, while Paul Lambert, Garry Monk, Nigel Pearson and Aitor Karanka are also in the run in for the position.
Carvalhal’s appointment came as a surprise but for two seasons it looked a good one and Wednesday may go a bit left field once again. Here are three outsiders they should consider:
Paul Cook
Paul Cook has done a fantastic job at Wigan since taking over last summer. He’s guided the Latics to the top of League One and on course for promotion to the Championship. Cook has won League Two twice – last season with Portsmouth and in 2014 with Chesterfield. He then guided the un-fancied Spireites to the League One play-offs in 2015.

Cook has hit the ground running from the start in his recent roles and that’s exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need. The Owls will need a good compensation package to prize him away from the DW but that’s certainly something within their reach.
Danny Cowley
Danny Cowley has known nothing but success so far in his short managerial career. After leading part time Braintree Town to the National League play-offs in 2016, he then took the Lincoln City job and guided them to promotion back to the football league while also leading the to the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

Cowley has got the Imps challenging for promotion yet again and he’s a man on a roll and his wave of momentum is exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need. Promotion is all he seems to know at the moment and he’s the type of manager to squeeze the very best out of what he has.

A man who’s familiar with the club and will certainly bring passion and energy which could help reinvigorate their season. It must be said that he ultimately failed in his last role at Sunderland however it mustn’t be forgotten that he’s been successful too. He won the League Two title with Swindon Town while also guiding them to the EFL Trophy final in 2012.
Also, when he initially joined Sunderland, he breathed new life into their faltering season and kept them in the Premier League within the eight games he had remaining in 2013.
