Herrera was offloaded to Necaxa by Rangers this month, and he is on fire.

Eduardo Herrera is playing like a man on a mission. He joined Necaxa – a club he played for as a boy – on loan from Rangers this month, and it has not taken any time for Herrera to hit the ground running.

The 30-year-old target man ended his season-long loan spell at Santos Laguna, in which he managed just 11 outings in all competitions. With his Rangers career all but over, he was loaned to another Mexican side in Necaxa.

Three minutes into his debut, Herrera scored an excellent header against San Luis in a 2-0 win, before playing an important part in a 2-1 win over Pumas.

His second goal came in a 2-1 loss to one of the heavyweights of the division in Club America, and on Sunday evening, the nine-time Mexico international netted his third from the penalty spot.

Three in four games for the £1.5million (Record) Rangers signing, so should Steven Gerrard give him a second chance – if he continues this explosive form?

With 17 matches still to play for Necaxa and more if they do well in the Cup, Herrera has a chance to really show Rangers fans what he is capable of by remaining injury free and continuing his excellent form.

Herrera has 18 months remaining on his Rangers contract and there is time on his side, if he harbours any aspiration of returning to Scotland. Yes, the Gers have plenty of options up front, but Herrera offers something different.

Acting as a target man, Herrera is unbeatable in the air – or so he is at the moment when looking at his Necaxa form – but is just as good at bringing others into play.

Perhaps, Gerrard should at least cast an eye in the direction of Mexico and see if Herrera can maintain his excellent start to life at Club Necaxa.
