Leeds United are expected to strengthen in goal after allowing Felix Wiedwald to leave.

Leeds United’s pursuit of a new number one is said to have hit a snag… or two.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, one target, Angus Gunn, may be bound for Southampton instead, while a loan offer for another, David Stockdale, has failed.

But to whom could Leeds turn if neither player arrives at Elland Road?

Here are three realistic candidates…

Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday)

There have been few better goalkeepers than Westwood these past few Championship campaigns. However, with Sheffield Wednesday desperate to balance the books, the Irishman could be on the market this summer – especially with understudies Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson impressing in his absence last term. Like Stockdale, Westwood is thought to be among his club’s highest earners. However, with his contract up in a year’s time, Wednesday may be less inclined to dig their heels.

Sam Johnstone (Manchester United)

Part of an Aston Villa side that reached the play-off final last season, Johnstone’s return to Villa Park is likely to be blocked by money. And with parent club Manchester United reportedly ready to add a third fourth senior keeper to their ranks in the shape of Stoke’s Lee Grant, the 25-year-old may seek a move this summer. Whether Leeds could tempt their rivals to another loan deal remains to be seen, however, and a full-time transfer is perhaps favourable.

Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace)

Despite reports of a new contract being imminent, Hennessey has yet to commit to Crystal Palace (publicly at least). And with Vicente Guaita expected to become Eagles’ number one after his summer move from Getafe, it is possible the Welshman is having second thoughts. Though his wages could be on the hefty side, Hennessey is not thought to command a transfer fee, which could help to stretch Leeds’ budget.
