Two former Liverpool goalkeepers are among the options for Crystal Palace after Wednesday’s transfer deadline.
Crystal Palace manager made no secret of his desire to sign a new goalkeeper in January, but ended up going without. It was not for the want of trying, with deals for Vicente Guaita – who looks set to arrive in the summer instead – and Frederik Ronnow reportedly discussed. Should he still wish to add to his options, however, he can still do so courtesy of the free transfer market – the only stipulation being that any player signed must have been without contract before Wednesday’s transfer deadline. Here’s three who could well fit the bill, including two former Liverpool shot-stoppers…
Piet Velthuizen
Velthuizen is looking for a new club after recently having his contract cancelled by Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia. He spent last season in Israel with Hapoel Haifa, but was previously Vitesse Arnhem’s long-serving number one. The 31-year-old made his name at the GelreDome, where his early form led to one solitary Dutch cap and a move to La Liga with Hercules – for an albeit brief spell.
Diego Cavalieri
Cavalieri is also newly unemployed, after seven years of service – and more than 200 appearances – for Fluminense. The 35-year-old – who was capped three times by Brazil but also holds an Italian passport – should be known to Hodgson, having played twice for the Palace boss while at Liverpool. That said, he was moved on shortly after – and replaced by Brad Jones.
Charles Itandje
Itandje was recently freed by Turkish second tier side Adanaspor – his third club in two-and-a-half years in the country – but has plenty of top flight experience, not only there, but also in Greece and France. The 35-year-old did spend more than three years on the books of Liverpool, but is not fondly remembered on Merseyside after being deemed to have behaved inappropriately at the memorial service for the twentieth anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. The Cameroon international was also let go during Hodgson’s reign.
