Specialist centre-forwards are in short supply at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after they allowed two to leave in the space of a week and failed to get a replacement over the line.
Although plenty can play there if required, much of the line-leading responsibility is set to fall upon the shoulders of summer signing Leo Bonatini from now until January.
That is unless Wolves decide to enter the free agent market, as has been hinted at by owner Jeff Shi this week.
So who’s available? Here’s three who could tick the box for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side:
Giuseppe Rossi
The former Manchester United striker is currently sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury, although he should be fit again by mid-October, according to Transfermarkt. Still only 30, Rossi has 64 goals in 170 La Liga matches to his name, as well as 25 in 53 in Serie A. But it remains to be seen whether he could be the hold-up player Wolves are looking for according to Shi.
Rickie Lambert
Someone who would fit that criteria, however, is Lambert. The former England striker was recently released by Cardiff after a disappointing year, but spent the four previous campaigns playing regularly in the Premier League for clubs including Southampton, Liverpool and one close by who shalln’t be named. His Championship record stands at 60 appearances and 31 goals.
Cheick Diabate
After Jurgen Locadia’s failed move from PSV Eindhoven, Diabate could be the most suitable alternative for Wolves – standing at close to 6ft 5ins tall, and boasting a career goals tally of 94 in 216 games. 58 of those were scored in France’s top flight, during spells at Bordeaux and Metz, with whom he ended last season. The 29-year-old Mali international was a teammate of Wolves new boy Alfred N’Diaye at Nancy.
