Joe Worrall’s loan spell at Rangers began in superb fashion. Making his debut for the Scottish outfit against Villarreal in the Europa League, the Nottingham Forest loanee earned applause from Rangers fans.
However, fast forward a couple of months and the 21-year-old’s chances of game time at Ibrox are diminishing by the second. Indeed, three things have suggested that the England youth international is falling down the pecking order.
Friday’s rumours include Rangers remaining interested in former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, with Turkish outlet CNN Turk claiming that the Scottish outfit are not giving up in their bid to form a reunion with Steven Gerrard.
Adding the 101-time Slovakia international into the equation will see Worrall’s chances of first-team football dramatically reduce, with Skrtel a much more experienced, proven option.
But it does not stop there. Nikola Katic has since been recalled to the side after he was replaced by Worrall, and the summer signing has continued to show fans why he deserves a place in the side.
Finally, Gareth McAuley finally made his debut for Rangers as a late substitute against Spartak Moscow, before featuring for a half against Motherwell. Despite his age, you would think a player of his experience would be considered first choice.
Three reasons, then, why Worrall has reason to be concerned over what could become a lack of game time at Ibrox with Gerrard preferring a back four rather than three central defenders. Time will tell.
