Mark Hughes has recently admitted that he will be focussing on signing central defenders during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Here are three defenders he should consider this summer:

Nathan Ake

If Chelsea sign a big-money defender, say someone like Virgin van Dijk (linked frequently), the Blues could be willing to let Ake go out on a loan again.

The 22-year-old Dutch defender impressed during his loan spell at Bournemouth, and should be a fantastic addition to the Stoke City squad.

Calum Chambers

Another young defender Hughes should be looking to sign, either permanently or on loan.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a brilliant 2016/17 season with Middlesbrough, on loan from Arsenal, where he made 23 Premier League appearances for the Riverside club.

However, with Boro now relegated, chances are very less that he would play in the Championship.

Also, he is unlikely to break into the Arsenal starting XI next season, and the Gunners would happily welcome the idea of sending him on loan again.

Phil Jones

According to reports from The Independent, Manchester United are open to offers for Phil Jones.

Jones, 25, joined United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, and expectations were very high from him. He has shown flashes of his ability, but has largely disappointed with his United career being blighted by injuries.

This season injury problems haven’t been severe to him, but he needs a fresh start and regular football to regain his old form.
