You never know what you get with Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce. Magpies supporters expected relegation when he was appointed last season, but he managed to fare better than Rafa Benitez.
Newcastle started this season in style. They beat West Ham away, but were smashed 3-0 at home by Brighton just a week later. The Magpies have conceded 22 goals after 13 league games this term. That is simply not good enough.
Bruce will be looking to sign a new defender in January. Newcastle have been linked with a fair few of them, and here are three players they can realistically bring in next month.
Marcos Rojo
The Athletic claimed last week that Bruce is interested in signing the Manchester United man. The Newcastle boss wants a centre-half who can also provide cover at left-back, and Rojo fits the bill perfectly.
The Argentine international is out of favour at Old Trafford. He hasn’t played a single game for Manchester United this term, and a transfer in the January transfer window should be straight-forward if Newcastle really want him.

Jetro Willems
The Dutchman joined Newcastle on a season-long loan deal last term. He became a big hit among fans but suffered a horrible injury that kept him out of the side for the second half of the campaign.
Willems returned to Frankfurt and, despite many rumours in the summer, Newcastle did not bring him back. However, the Chronicle revealed this month that the versatile Dutchman wants to return to Tyneside.
Considering he only has six months left on his contract, Eintracht will likely be open to letting him leave for a small fee.

Fikayo Tomori
The Chelsea defender has been tipped by many as the next great English defender. He was brilliant in his loan spell at Derby two years ago and Frank Lampard, who thought he was incredible, kept him at Stamford Bridge.
Tomori, sadly, hasn’t had many opportunities this season. He has three appearances to his name this term and, if a report from the Telegraph is to be believed, Bruce is keen to sign him on loan in next month’s transfer window.
