The right back has fallen out of favour at Stoke City, but he could be of use at Newcastle, West Brom or Sheffield Wednesday.

Glen Johnson is set to be axed by Stoke City according to the Telegraph.

The defender has only featured four times in all competitions so far this season and is deemed surplus to requirements at the Bet365 stadium.

Here are three clubs the 33-year-old could join if he is to be sold in January:

West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion have a shortage of natural full-backs, with Tony Pulis often played four centre halves during the early parts of his reign. Albion’s only natural right-back is Alan Nyom who hasn’t been convincing in that position.

Pardew plays with a flat back four which suits Johnson better than Stoke’s back three so he should get the game time he wants in his best position. He’s experienced at the highest level and knows the Premier League inside-out and has the characteristics required for a relegation battle.

Newcastle United

Rafael Benitez has had a number of problems in both full-back positions this season. Paul Dummett has been sidelined while Javier Manquillo has been a huge disappointment. DeAndre Yedlin is the man in favour but he hasn’t exactly been outstanding.

Newcastle are slipping towards relegation and need an experienced head, with Premier League quality to help get them out of trouble. Benitez bought Johnson for £18m in 2009 when he was managing Liverpool so he does rate the defender. Johnson played a number of games at left-back in 2013 so he also provides an option on both sides for the Spaniard.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday supporters have grown frustrated with Jack Hunt’s injury record and performances recently and questions have started being asked. Liam Palmer has been filling in during Hunt’s absence but right back isn’t his natural position.

The Owl’s promotion push is faltering by the week so a wise head and a leader could be exactly what they need to help revitalise their season and Johnson can bring that. Wednesday are a big club with great history and playing at Hillsborough could be an attractive proposition for the former Chelsea man.
