Everton have the joint second worse defensive record in the Premier League and need reinforcements.

Everton’s season got worse after their 5-1 defeat to Atalanta on Thursday night. They’ve now conceded 13 goals in their last four matches, outlining their defensive problems.

Michael Keane has struggled for confidence since arriving for £30m from Burnley, while Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka’s form has fallen below par.

Here are three defenders who Everton could sign to save their faltering campaign:

Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen was apparently denied a move to Goodison Park in the summer according to the Sun. The 32-year-old wanted a return to the Premier League but remained at the Nou Camp where he’s only featured once this season.

Barcelona may be more willing to let him go in January after his lack of involvement. Fitness is a concern, but his quality and experience would a great asset to Everton.

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling has found himself back in the Manchester United team after injuries to Eric Bailly and Phil Jones and has been playing well. That being said, Marcos Rojo made his return from injury and impressed against Basel.

Jones and Bailly will be ahead of him upon their return, while United also have Victor Lindelof. With four other defenders, Mourinho may be open to selling Smalling to Everton, who they will not regard as a major rival.

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans has become arguably West Bromwich Albion’s best player since arriving from Old Trafford in 2015. He’s the club captain and is known to have attracted interest from Pep Guardiola in the summer. Evan’s has now been linked with Everton in the Daily Mail, after they reportedly showed an interest in the summer too.

The Baggies wanted £30m for Evans, a fee Everton paid for Keane, and they may be willing to do it again -especially if Evans can help keep them up. Evans has won Premier League titles and has become a leader for Albion, something that Everton have been missing this season.
