Rangers should look at bringing the Liverpool midfielder to Ibrox, as well as Dutch winger Ryan Babel and Swansea City defender Mike van der Hoorn.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will surely be keen to bolster his ranks at Ibrox during the January transfer window, in a bid to guide his side to their first top flight title since 2011.

The problem for the former Liverpool and England skipper, however, is that he will certainly not have an endless pot of cash to splash out, so he will have to be thrifty in his player recruitment.

With this in mind, here are three potential targets for Rangers, and with their contracts set to expire in the summer, they could be available for a cut-price fee next month…

Ryan Babel:

The 32-year-old winger will be familiar with Steven Gerrard, having spent four years at Anfield with the 38-year-old from 2007-2011.

His contract with Besiktas is set to expire in the summer, so he could be available for a bargain fee next month, and he would add a certain level of quality and directness to Rangers’ play in the final third.

Babel is still at an age where he has a lot to offer, and he really could take the Scottish Premiership by storm.

Lazar Marković:

Another player who will know Gerrard very well, the Serbian would be an excellent addition for the Gers.

At 24, Marković hasn’t reached his peak yet, and he really does have so much potential, although he has never really showed what he is capable of in England.

The Liverpool man is incredibly versatile, and can play on either wing as well as in both wing-back roles.

Mike van der Hoorn:

The Swansea City centre-back is an incredibly consistent performer, and he would be a superb addition for Rangers.

The Dutchman would provide more competition for the likes of Connor Goldson and the ageing Gareth McAuley.

At 26, Van der Hoorn still has so much to offer, and his ability with the ball at his feet makes him a perfect fit for Gerrard’s system.

It will undoubtedly be hard to sign all three, but Gerrard should certainly at least explore the possibility of bringing them to Ibrox.

Rangers are expected to push Celtic all the way for the league title this season, and if they sign any of the above mentioned players, they will be in a good position from which to do just that.
