Three areas Wolves will look to strengthen in January

With the January transfer window now open, HITC Sport looks at three key areas in which Paul Lambert may be looking for reinforcements.

Still lingering at the wrong end of the Championship table, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to turn their fortunes around this January. New boss Paul Lambert, who took over from Walter Zenga last year, will be hoping to use the transfer to bring in his own players, in order to start taking the Midlands giant up the table toward the play-off places; a position a club of this size should be aiming for.

With that in mind, we take a look at three key areas where Wolves might be looking to recruit, to either add something different to their team, or to improve on a significantly weak area of the team.

Defensive Cover

After being struck by a number of injuries over the season, Wolves fans will be well aware of the dangers of not recruiting in key areas, and one of those which needs strengthening the most for Lambert’s side is the defence. Struggling for cover at full-back and centre-back, Wolves have been forced in recent weeks to field players out of position, and are therefore likely to be looking to bring another defender into the club in this window. With a number of Premier League clubs looking to offload their young defenders for game time, Wolves may be looking for full-back cover from the league above, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings possibly available.

A Midfield Maestro

Wolves have failed to set the Championship alight this season, and at times have found themselves played off the park in midfield, struggling for creativity. In their squad, Wolves have a number of hard-working, tough-tackling midfielders such as Conor Coady and David Edwards, but are struggling for a player who can score goals. Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane has caught the eye this season, as a midfielder who can both boss the midfield and contribute with goals, and might be one Paul Lambert will have his eye on as he looks to bolster his midfield.

A Proven Goalscorer

If they’re going to start making their way up the table, Wolves are going to need goals, and the best way to gets those is to invest in a proven goalscorer at Championship level. With money to spend, Wolves are rumoured to be in pursuit of a number of strikers, for the right price. With Middlesbrough duo Jordan Rhodes and David Nugent apparently available, and Villa’s Ross McCormack struggling to settle down the road, Paul Lambert is more than likely going to add a striker to his side this month.
