Three areas Watford could look to strengthen in January

With the January transfer window now open, where will Watford be looking to improve their squad?

As they battle to stop what could descend into relegation to the Championship, Watford manager Walter Mazzarri will be desperate to improve his squad during the January transfer window. Despite bringing in a number of players over the summer, the Hornets are drifting steadily closer to the relegation zone, and now are in need of some new blood to jump start their season.

With that in mind, we take a look at three areas Watford will be looking to add to this month, as the race to stay in the Premier League hots up.

A New Central Defender

After conceding a number of goals in recent weeks, Watford look like they could do with a fresh face at the heart of their defence. Their system, which revolves around playing 3 central defenders and two wing-backs, requires their centre-halves to be fast on technically gifted, so this will be the type of player Mazzarri may look to bring in. Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia or free agent and former Juventus defender Martin Caceres would both be good targets for the Italian.

An Attacking Midfielder

Needing a few more goals from midfield, Watford may look to bring another attacking midfielder in this window. Nottingham Forest’s Henri Lansbury and Barnsley’s impressive Conor Hourihane are options in the second tier, though the former is expected to join Aston Villa (according to HITC sources). However, there are also options in the Premier League if Watford are prepared to spend, with the likes of Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson or Stoke City’s Bojan sure to improve the team.

A New Striker

Troy Deeney has suffered this season, and many Watford fans would put this down to the fact that he hasn’t had a regular striking partner working off him, as Odion Ighalo did so well last season. Deeney’s hold up play, which has won him many plaudits, isn’t properly utilised without a quick striker working off him, and this may turn the London club to look for reinforcements. With Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Burnley’s Andre Grey both putting in eye-catching displays this season, and full of pace, they might be two good options for the Hornets.
