With the January transfer window now open, where will Spurs be looking to improve their squad?
With the race for the Premier League title hotting up, Tottenham Hotspur will surely see the now open January transfer window as a huge opportunity. As Chelsea now begin to move further and further away from the chasers at the top of the league, teams such as Spurs will surely be looking to add to their squad this month as they search for a way to propel themselves after their London rivals.
But where do Mauricio Pochettino’s side need to improve? Do they need more bodies as the club pushes for another Champions League finish? Or even the title? We take a look at three key areas Spurs could do with strengthening this month, and throw out some possible names of players they could look to bring in.

Defensive Cover
Largely lauded as the best central-defensive partnership in the league, Tottenham defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have won many plaudits both this season and before for their solid performances. However, injuries struck both during 2016, with Alderweireld being forced to sit out lengthy spells of this season, and this may force Pochettino’s hand into the market. Southampton’s Jose Fonte would be a superb addition to come in, even if the Argentine’s former Saints captain would be hard to recruit from the South Coast club.

A Pacy Winger
Despite being spoilt for creative and attacking midfield players, Spurs are currently lacking a bit of pace on the flanks. In the past, Tottenham have had some excellent wide players, such as Aaron Lennon (now at Everton) and the world-class Gareth Bale. However, Pochenttino’s style of play tends to favour wide players who like to cut in side, often fielding attacking midfielders over the out and out wingers Spurs fans were used to under managers like Harry Redknapp. With this bit of pace lacking in the side, and with rumours circulating about another potential pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (Guardian), Pochettino may be looking to add someone who can both create and score to his arsenal.

Another Forward Player
Despite adding Dutch forward Vincent Janssen to their ranks over the summer, many Spurs fans would argue that they are still lacking adequate cover for their start striker, Harry Kane. With the England forward hitting some serious form for Spurs recently, the forward position isn’t likely to be the highest priority on Pochettino’s list. However, if Kane were to pick up another injury, Spurs could quickly find themselves in need of goals.
With a number of top strikers to choose from in this division, but not many around who might be okay with playing second-fiddle to Kane, Spurs should consider looking a little further down the table for other striking options, with Burnley’s Andre Gray and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson catching the eye.
